TIPS AND TRICKS

+ HOW TO GET THE BEST PHOTOS POSSIBLE!

  • House of Yes can be VERY dark for parties so bring fast glass lenses

  • Minimum f/2.8. Even f/4 can look dark without bringing up exposure in Photoshop or having on camera flash. Use ISO 1200+ to get good exposure in the camera.

  • If you don’t have an f/2.8 zoom using a couple of bodies with fast prime lenses also works well.

  • When shooting at parties with flash it’s likely best to use a DSLR instead of a mirrorless camera so that your flash can use its focus assist infrared light.

  • If you’re shooting with a mirrorless camera body make sure the focus assist lamp on your camera body is turned on.

  • For theater shows where stage lighting is being used you can reduce your ISO to around 400, and increase your shutter speed to at least 1/100 to get optimum focus. Set your camera to Auto White Balance because many different colored lights could be in use.

  • Shoot in RAW so that you have the best ability to modify overly color-saturated shots

  • A lot of the performers "hit marks" on the stage/aerially or perform to the beat of the music playing, so if you watch them closely you can time great moments

  • There are several darker alcoves at House of Yes where you can use flash liberally and where you can request people with great outfits to pose for shots

  • Don't be afraid to get shots of partygoers outside along the exterior wall of House of Yes, it makes for a great backdrop right before/after parties

  • Watch how the lighting at the club moves, often you don't need to use flash if you time the lighting (and crank ISO just a tad)

  • Experiment! Weird/exciting images are always more fun than hyper-in-focus but boring shots.
