Beginner Poi with Claire de Luxe

New Wednesday beginner poi class!  Wednesdays 6-7:30 (March 7-May 10)

This class will be held on a roof in South Williamsburg and will therefore be $140 instead of $180 for a 10-week series. In case of rain or other extreme weather, we would move downstairs to my apartment, which would hold all of us but might involve moving a little furniture. Part of the class may be in dusk or dark – we will have some lighting on the roof but this will not be ideal studio conditions, hence the reduced price. The class aspects, however, will remain the same and the last class will be a FIRE class!! Located at 435 Broadway at Hewes, Brooklyn Please confirm via email to deezluxe@gmail.com.  A $70 deposit will be required to confirm registration, and $70 cash the first day of class. Up to two missed classes may be made up by attending an alternate poi class during the 10-week session. Refunds are not given once poi class begins.

This class will be focused on outlining ideas and concepts for working out your own moves and sequences, and will guide you through a process of how to discover the fun of this wonderful prop. We will focus on various aspects of fan technique, including lines & patterns, body placement, tech, tricks, spins, tosses, story, movement, and sequencing. Much of the class will be student-based, with a focus on sharing, communicating, and exploring with each other. The last class will be a FIRE class!. Location: Battery Park. Price: special debut price of $125.

But when people think of February they don’t often think of Love’s darker, more complicated cousin: OBSESSION. And if perchance they do, the thought is usually fleeting and diluted, like a whiff of the eponymous Calvin Klein perfume. Come explore the many interpretations of Obsession, and you too may become…Obsessed!

So, as everyone else spends his or her February in a cutesy chocolate-heart induced sugar-coma, we here at the Sky Box at the House of Yes will be meticulously delving into the heart of OBSESSION. Sky Box POLITICAL Aerial and Variety Show

More often than not, live “entertainment,” by which we mean everything from l.e.s. Performance Art (capital A) to the most over-produced Broadway spectacle (just capital), is regarded as a mere distraction from the woes of the “real” world. At best, entertainment is sometimes perceived as a metaphor for the state of current affairs, but, for the most part, ART is considered to be just for fun, while POLITICS has pretenses to being for realz!

Yet politics and performance have way more in common than the disciples of each would likely be comfortable admitting. For example, both politicians and performers command authority and power, both have to twist reality, not only to keep their audiences engaged, but also to convert them to their point of view, both can be bought, both have to wear costumes to work, and last, but definitely not least, they both have parties!!!

After spending the past three and a half years unabashedly indulging in everything aesthetic, entertainment-driven and silly, the Sky Box at the House of Yes would like to invite you to come and get serious as we discuss the bureaucratic, civic, constitutional, economical and legislative landscapes of the world today. It was the birth of birth control, the beginning of “cool”, the end of post-war america.

There have been wild rumors going around that there’s a third floor at the House of Yes. After trying to deny these rumors for 3 years, we decided to come clean…even with our (gasp) LANDLORD. The good news is that our landlord is extremely happy with us as tenants, which makes us feel extremely optimistic about sticking around in this building for a long long time.

Here is the challenging news: We now have to transition our third floor into art studios/offices/healing rooms/video suites/you name it. This was always the long term plan, and we’re happy to be making our private space available to working professionals. Some of the spaces are available as early as December 1st, but most are available January 1st. We are completely and utterly open to what these spaces will be repurposed as. Although most know us as a space for crazy shows and crazier parties, during the day we are a full-on production facility that works on mainstream projects involving established brands and companies running the full gamut of everything that fits into the production and entertainment industry. The third floor is completely secure and away from the general public.

The rooms are roughly 250 sq feet and will come with a to-be-negotiated package deal of use of our facility. The ballpark of rent will be $500-$800 range, based on how much access you will be needing to our resources: sound recording studio, aerial studio, main space, sewing/costume studio, Materials for the Arts access, and MORE!

Ideally, we are looking for:
-Professional and ambitious people who are expanding an already existing business.
-Businesses/projects/groups that will coexist with what the House of Yes does, and also benefit from it by having their headquarters here.

It is incredible how fast projects move along here,  and how rapidly we’ve been growing. We are very excited about the prospect of joining forces with more passionate and driven artists and entrepreneurs.

The creative counter culture paradise known as Rubulad is seeking a new home. Rubulad has existed for MANY YEARS and is the grandmother of House of Yes. Some would say that without a Rubulad, House of Yes would have never come to be. It is a melting pot of magic where connections are made, ideas become reality and magic is real. There is no place like it on earth, and the world is a better place because of it.

::::::::::OCCUPY BROADWAY!!!:::::::::

EVENT: Occupy Broadway (the theatre/shopping district) with performance and spectacle for 24 hours straight.

WHEN: December 2nd starting at 6pm until December 3rd at 6pm

WHAT: We will introduce tourists and New Yorkers uptown going to Broadway shows or shopping themselves into debt in Times Square to the idea of occupation as CREATIVE resistance with non-stop free
performances.  We will set up in a privately owned public space near Times Square.  This movement is spreading around the world and around New York City.  In a time when downtown theaters are rapidly losing their spaces, being turned into high-end fashion stores, it is a symbolic attempt to regain the space of theatre as an accessible, popular art form, bringing it back to where it all started – in a public space, for the common citizen.

The organizers are looking for groups in all styles and genres, to present a segment (2 minutes to 2 hours long) that has a theme of the 99% movement, possibly holiday related, festive, radical caroling, large puppets, marching  bands, dance, etc.
