For the first time ever we actually have it all for you all. Learn slapstick, sewing and aerial from the best, see performance art at its weirdest, and then again at its nakedest later on in the week, AND although we promised no more dance parties ever again, we were talked into squeezing one in anyways….it wasn’t so bad after all, and only one person tagged our fancy bathroom.

Slapstick Dojo: Learn to Fall Funny

The Slapstick Dojo teaches physical comedy using martial arts techniques. Students will learn how to trip, slip, fall down, and slap each other in safe and funny ways. This conflict may be between individuals, between a person and an object, or between a person and his environment. The class operates similar to a yoga or martial arts class, where students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to “workout” and further develop technique. Borrowing ideas from martial arts training such as Kata and Waza the Slapstick Dojo aims to teach slapstick techniques and classic slapstick gag structure.

Playing and Presence: A Physical Approach to Acting and Performing

This two-hour workshop is geared toward performers of all types, including actors, aerialists, singers, and dancers. The aim of the workshop is to uncover the child-like sense of wonder that each of us can find within ourselves, and infuse our approach to performance with openness, spontaneity, and adventure. It’s about remembering that, as performers, our “work” is actually PLAY; from moment to moment to moment to moment. The series of exercises will draw from sources as various as the physical acting techniques of Jerzy Grotowski, the deconstructionist choreographic theory of the Six Viewpoints, the laser-precision of Neo-Classical textwork, and the mind-and-body expanding practices of Tantra Yoga. Please bring a memorized piece of text, about one minute in length. Twelve lines of Shakespeare will do if you’re stuck. It can even be a song. This workshop is open to all, regardless of level of experience in any field of performance.

This workshop is $20.

Taught by our brilliant instructor, Michael Bartelle… www.michaelbartelle.com .

:::::Aerial Open Mic: Seeking performers for September 18th

The Skybox at the House of Yes is currently seeking performers and acts to showcase during our maritime-themed, aerial-infused open mic. The performance will take place at Skybox (www.theskybox.org), on Friday, September 18. The theme is all things maritime. Pirates, mermaids, sailors, octopi, aquatic creatures and boats are all acceptable inspirations, but feel free to think of your own maritime influence. In the past we have hosted open mic performances that were entirely aerial-focused, but we are now opening our open mic up to all inspired people with brilliant acts to show their stuff! As long as it’s maritime, we want to see it! We are also pleased to announce that we have a phenomenal MC for this show. His name is Ben “he-man” Devoe and he’s a real life pirate! He lives on the giant ferryboat parked a few blocks from Skybox with his other pirate friends. Aside from being absolutely hilarious and a great singer, he was also once a bodybuilder. There will be a simple audition process, conducted by Anya. Please contact her at anya(at)ladycircus.com to discuss. She is away at sea for the moment, so please allow a few days for a response.

::::House of Yes helps the Yes Men…(and you can too)

We are currently helping the Yes Men (theyesmen.org) hatch a top-secret project involving Survivaballs that will prank the corporate masses. This is the biggest operation that the yes men have ever tried, and they need your help to make it float. Literally. Click the links if you want to be a part of a large-scale practical joke.

If you are a group leader and want to organize your friends:
fill out this group availability form, one time on behalf of your group

If you are willing to wear corporate or clean professional looking attire AND/OR a Survivaball, fill out this:
individual availability form on behalf of yourself

If you are a shooter with your own equipment:
update your availability here and Brandon will be in touch with you

:::::Is there a Yoga Teacher in the House?

No there is not. And there SHOULD be!
We have had requests for a yoga class at the House of Yes. If you are interested in teaching yoga on a donation basis, please contact kaeburke@gmail.com, so we can discuss a schedule and details. We already have blocks, straps and yoga mats. We just need someone to make us go “OM”.

WEDNESDAY July 29th.

This Night School, come learn to swap! Okay, so I admit, there isn’t much “education” involved in swapping clothes and accessories, but its a lot of fun and you’ll meet great people (with great style). As far as I’m concerned, it still fits our curriculum. All you need to do is bring a bag of clothing or some useful non-wearable items, and it always helps to bring a little donation to make sure Night School continues to happen. I guess if we’re learning anything, were learning that you don’t have to shop…you just need to swap. Feel free to bring drinkables and edibles too.

No Parking on the Dancefloor #10

N0_PARKING10

DeeJays: $mall ¢hange, Joro Boro, Barney Iller

Finally! The return of (to misquote Ted Turner about the Braves) “America’s” party. That’s right kids, what really unites us all: free speech impediments, life, libertarians, and the pursuit of unregulated corporate bonuses. And of course DANCING, which the NY supreme court refused to acknowledge was a fundamental human right (and that’s why the no dancing laws are STILL on the books, btw). We know, though. We know the time. Fuck these lame-ass, backward-ass, asinine-ass-motherfuckers. Dancing is some basic shit that we all should be enjoying more often than we do. Hence, ‘No Parking on the Dancefloor’. A party about getting down.

We’ve taken a short break to catch our breath but this shit can’t be stopped. Its now going monthly, with slightly expanded hours, and will be on the 3rd Thursday of the month, but the next one is THIS THURS July 30th with stella underground selectros Joro Boro and Barney Iller. Expect eclectic booty shakin’ selections for y’all to shake it don’t break it shake it to break it to.

It’s choreographed and directed by Maia Ramnath, with material contributed by performers Lori Barber, Scott Combs, Jane Gardner, Ian Lassiter, Nicki Miller, Danielle Natoli, Rubi Sartorious, and Satomi Shikata. The evening also features choreography by Katie Clancy and Sarah Wollschlager performed by Sego Marchand.

Ride on Til Dawn II: The Lion’s Den

We are celebrating everyone’s favorite zodiac sign… Leo! come celebrate those courageous, exuberant and sometimes gratuitous friends who were born under the sign of the lion. It’s a party for Leos, by Leos…like our friends and collaborators Jordann, Anya, Lena and Aaron. For some reason, a lot of people involved in making the House of Yes possible and wonderful are Leo’s. Coincidence? No. Lets party.

But its not just any old birthday party…It’s also a farewell party. After 9 years and 360 days in New York, everyone’s favorite bus-driving, music making, story telling sound-man, Aaron Goldsmith, is leaving our fair metropolis for the granola-covered eco-friendly hippie hills of the West Coast. Yes, his Circus Bus is going West too. Aaron has been the man responsible for bringing us live jams, funky beats, and soul-train dance-offs till dawn over the years. And we love him for it. This might be your last time ever to enjoy a party at the House of Yes that is brought to you by Aaron (at least until 3 months from now)

With awesome bands:

Prez Powerz (Intergalactic Hip hop with break dancers)

Escarioka (Latin Ska and rock steady with horns!)

FreeBass (Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass and Beats)

DJs: Joro Boro (Bulgarian Bar) and Barney Iller (Rubulad)

VJs: !Include and 0H10M1k3

BJs: Dennis (just kidding – Dennis is already in SF!)

Costumes: Funky feline, or dress as Anya, Aaron, Jordann, or Leo. Free to anyone wearing a life-sized lion costume.

This week at Night School, we will be exploring the tip-of-the-tounge, off-the-top-of-your-head art of Improvisation. Open to all levels of experience, but please come ready to express yourself in ridiculous ways.

This workshop will begin with a short improv demonstration by our talented guest teacher and improv master Jon Bruce.
