The End Times Cabaret presents “THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED.”

House of Yes is taking the show on the road, all the way to The Bell House…in GOWANUS Brooklyn! Follow us across the borough, and we will take you on an entertaining journey into the good ol times…the 1960′s!

The Day the Music Died will entertain your socks off, with a ferocious live brass band, stunning aerial acrobatics and hilarious dance numbers, showcasing the social/political/popular culture changes that occurred between 1958-1961. This was a transition time of Housewives to liberated women, doo wop to freak out jazz, politeness to protest, innocence to innovation. It was the birth of birth control, the beginning of “cool”, the end of post-war america.

Inspired by the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper on what became known as “The Day the Music Died,” this special evening features performances by songwriter and arranger Phil Andrews of Apocalypse Five & Dime, the awe-inspiring aerial and burlesque performers of The Lady Circus such as Anya Sapozhnikova, Kenneth Stephen Neil, Brian Joseph Ferree, Rebecca Heinegg, Evgenia Radilova, Kathryne Van Assche, Ashley Morgan Monroe, Juanita Cardenas, Eric Schmalenberger, transcendent vocalist XAVIER, dynamic dance troupe “The Good to Go Girls,” and many more. Spread the word!

:::::::POLITICAL VARIETY SHOW CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS!!!! THURSDAY, JANUARY 19th!:::::::

More often then not, the entire gamut of performance art to show biz is considered a mere distraction from the woes of the “real” world.  At best it is acknowledged as a metaphor for the state of current affairs, and not much more then satirical commentary. All in all, ART is cosidered for fun, and POLITICS is considered for realz.

Yet politics and performance  have way more in common then either   one of these abstract concepts would probably be comfortable to admit. For example, both politicians and performers command authority and power. Both have to twist reality in a way to not just keep their audiences engaged but also convince them to believe in their point of view (if only for a second).  Both can be bought. Both  have to wear costumes to work. And last but definitely not least both have parties!
Every voice supposedly counts. Do YOU have anything to say about all this?  Submit your act to anya@ladycircus.com with the subject line reading “POLITICS”  in all caps. This show is a fundraiser for our art space that is not funded by the government, payment will be in the shape of champagne, complimentary tickets and glory)

Size Queens! Expanding by 33.3%

Everyone knows that Kae and Anya are size queens. We can’t deny it. We do want to set the record straight about a little secret, and also let you know… we’re getting BIGGER.

:::::::::House of Yes is EXPANDING by 33.3%::::::::

There have been wild rumors going around that there’s a third floor at the House of Yes. After trying to deny these rumors for 3 years, we decided to come clean…even with our (gasp) LANDLORD. The good news is that our landlord is extremely happy with us as tenants, which makes us feel extremely optimistic about sticking around in this building for a long long time.

Here is the challenging news: We now have to transition our third floor into art studios/offices/healing rooms/video suites/you name it. This was always the long term plan, and we’re happy to be making our private space available to working professionals. Some of the spaces are available as early as December 1st, but most are available January 1st. We are completely and utterly open to what these spaces will be repurposed as. Although most know us as a space for crazy shows and crazier parties, during the day we are a full-on production facility that works on mainstream projects involving established brands and companies running the full gamut of everything that fits into the production and entertainment industry. The third floor is completely secure and away from the general public.

The rooms are roughly 250 sq feet and will come with a to-be-negotiated package deal of use of our facility. The ballpark of rent will be $500-$800 range, based on how much access you will be needing to our resources: sound recording studio, aerial studio, main space, sewing/costume studio, Materials for the Arts access, and MORE!

Ideally, we are looking for:
-Professional and ambitious people who are expanding an already existing business.
-Businesses/projects/groups that will coexist with what the House of Yes does, and also benefit from it by having their headquarters here.

It is incredible how fast projects move along here,  and how rapidly we’ve been growing. We are very excited about the prospect of joining forces with more passionate and driven artists and entrepreneurs.
Please help us spread the word far and wide. The future is bright.

Please contact anya@ladycircus.com if this is exactly what you’ve always dreamed of, subject line reading “33.3%”

Sincerely, Anya, Kae and the House of Yes Family.

::::::::::SAVE THE WORLD! SAVE RUBULAD! ::::::::::

The creative counter culture paradise known as Rubulad is seeking a new home. Rubulad has existed for MANY YEARS and is the grandmother of House of Yes. Some would say that without a Rubulad, House of Yes would have never come to be. It is a melting pot of magic where connections are made, ideas become reality and magic is real. There is no place like it on earth, and the world is a better place because of it.

At this point, the circumstances are dire: either Rubulad moves its mecca, or it disappears forever. We have until December 9th to help them raise $35,000. At that amount, every penny counts. We can do this.

Please take a moment and donate. You will not regret it.

::::::::::OCCUPY BROADWAY!!!:::::::::

EVENT: Occupy Broadway (the theatre/shopping district) with performance and spectacle for 24 hours straight.

WHEN: December 2nd starting at 6pm until December 3rd at 6pm

WHAT: We will introduce tourists and New Yorkers uptown going to Broadway shows or shopping themselves into debt in Times Square to the idea of occupation as CREATIVE resistance with non-stop free
performances.  We will set up in a privately owned public space near Times Square.  This movement is spreading around the world and around New York City.  In a time when downtown theaters are rapidly losing their spaces, being turned into high-end fashion stores, it is a symbolic attempt to regain the space of theatre as an accessible, popular art form, bringing it back to where it all started – in a public space, for the common citizen.

The organizers are looking for groups in all styles and genres, to present a segment (2 minutes to 2 hours long) that has a theme of the 99% movement, possibly holiday related, festive, radical caroling, large puppets, marching  bands, dance, etc.

Life and Death. Zombies and Rainbows.

The next two weekends pose a polarity of intrinsic opposition at the House of Yes, in which we experience the antithesis of the idea within the concept of its contrasting compliment; Life and Death. This Thursday we explore death; the absence of life, with A NIGHT OF MACABRE. Next weekend, we explore LIFE with a full theatrical production through a display of aerial extravagance known as DOUBLE RAINBOW!  Celebrate Life. Celebrate Death. You can’t have one without the other!!!

HOUSE OF YES WINS!

This past week marked a momentous occasion for House of Yes and the world. Kae Burke (House of Yes Janitor, Co-Director) was acknowledged by the prestigious Innovative Theatre Awards, receiving the award for “Most Innovative Design” for her aerial and rigging design in her Circus of Circus production. Basically it’s like winning an Emmy for Off Off Broadway. Or Grammy or whatever.

This means that House of Yes is finally recognized as a THEATRE! And not only just a theatre… an AERIAL THEATRE! And not only just an Aerial Theatre… but and INNOVATIVE one! But hey, you already knew that. We knew that too. We don’t need someone else telling us what we are. But we do like awards. BECAUSE WE’RE FUCKING WINNERS!!!

We’re Sorry… Let’s Get Naked!

Last Sunday, we hosted a Nutria-Fur Fashion Show that revolved around the idea of destroying Nutria animals and using their luscious fur to “save the wetlands”… but as our activist friends pointed out, it is HUMANS that are the real reason the environment is being destroyed! So… with that logic, should we kill and skin humans and use their fur instead? House of Yes says YES!

To apologize for our bad idea, we’d like to make up for it with a really GOOD idea- a Naked Dance Party and Human Skin Fashion Show!

We now realize that we shouldn’t be hosting events that promote the wearing of fur… or the wearing of ANYTHING for that matter. Because Fur is bad… but Clothes are worse. And we’re sorry.

::::::::THIS SUNDAY! November 28th::::::::

THE CIRCUS OF CIRCUS: A Tragic Tale of Entertainment.

Presenting…Tap dancing ladies, cross dressing ballerinas, musical production numbers, aerial carousels, matching costumes.. and real death! House of Yes has seriously outdone itself this time with Kae Burke’s first ever production and written show- Circus of Circus, a big-time, big-top musical of splendor and satire, adapted from George Orwell’s classic novella “Animal Farm”. This darkly humorous tale of a corrupt circus troupe overthrowing their ringmaster to create a dazzling show of their own, but through live jazz, witty script and spectacular circus numbers, the entertainers soon learn that “some performers are more equal than others”. Circus of Circus will have you entertained and terrified, amazed and afraid. Come for the complimentary Goldsmith’s Whiskey and stay for spectacle!

Written and Produced by Kae Burke of House of Yes and Lady Circus, The all-star cast includes seasoned performers of the circus and stage including Benjamin Cerf of Reverend Billy’s Choir, Ashley Monroe of Silky Sirens Burlesque, master acrobat Ryan Murray Shinji, fire performer Evgenia Radilova, aerial-contortionist Natasha Ortiz, and Eric Schmalenberger of Rachel Klein Productions as well as David Slone, Shannon Turner, Valton Jackson, Rachael Ma, Angela Harriell and the Love Show Dancers!

For the first time ever we actually have it all for you all. Learn slapstick, sewing and aerial from the best, see performance art at its weirdest, and then again at its nakedest later on in the week, AND although we promised no more dance parties ever again, we were talked into squeezing one in anyways….it wasn’t so bad after all, and only one person tagged our fancy bathroom.

Slapstick Dojo: Learn to Fall Funny

The Slapstick Dojo teaches physical comedy using martial arts techniques. Students will learn how to trip, slip, fall down, and slap each other in safe and funny ways. This conflict may be between individuals, between a person and an object, or between a person and his environment. The class operates similar to a yoga or martial arts class, where students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to “workout” and further develop technique. Borrowing ideas from martial arts training such as Kata and Waza the Slapstick Dojo aims to teach slapstick techniques and classic slapstick gag structure.

Playing and Presence: A Physical Approach to Acting and Performing

This two-hour workshop is geared toward performers of all types, including actors, aerialists, singers, and dancers. The aim of the workshop is to uncover the child-like sense of wonder that each of us can find within ourselves, and infuse our approach to performance with openness, spontaneity, and adventure. It’s about remembering that, as performers, our “work” is actually PLAY; from moment to moment to moment to moment. The series of exercises will draw from sources as various as the physical acting techniques of Jerzy Grotowski, the deconstructionist choreographic theory of the Six Viewpoints, the laser-precision of Neo-Classical textwork, and the mind-and-body expanding practices of Tantra Yoga. Please bring a memorized piece of text, about one minute in length. Twelve lines of Shakespeare will do if you’re stuck. It can even be a song. This workshop is open to all, regardless of level of experience in any field of performance.

This workshop is $20.

Taught by our brilliant instructor, Michael Bartelle… www.michaelbartelle.com .

:::::Aerial Open Mic: Seeking performers for September 18th

The Skybox at the House of Yes is currently seeking performers and acts to showcase during our maritime-themed, aerial-infused open mic. The performance will take place at Skybox (www.theskybox.org), on Friday, September 18. The theme is all things maritime. Pirates, mermaids, sailors, octopi, aquatic creatures and boats are all acceptable inspirations, but feel free to think of your own maritime influence. In the past we have hosted open mic performances that were entirely aerial-focused, but we are now opening our open mic up to all inspired people with brilliant acts to show their stuff! As long as it’s maritime, we want to see it! We are also pleased to announce that we have a phenomenal MC for this show. His name is Ben “he-man” Devoe and he’s a real life pirate! He lives on the giant ferryboat parked a few blocks from Skybox with his other pirate friends. Aside from being absolutely hilarious and a great singer, he was also once a bodybuilder. There will be a simple audition process, conducted by Anya. Please contact her at anya(at)ladycircus.com to discuss. She is away at sea for the moment, so please allow a few days for a response.

::::House of Yes helps the Yes Men…(and you can too)

If you are willing to wear corporate or clean professional looking attire AND/OR a Survivaball, fill out this:

:::::Is there a Yoga Teacher in the House?

No there is not. And there SHOULD be!
We have had requests for a yoga class at the House of Yes. If you are interested in teaching yoga on a donation basis, please contact kaeburke@gmail.com, so we can discuss a schedule and details. We already have blocks, straps and yoga mats. We just need someone to make us go “OM”.

WEDNESDAY July 29th.

This Night School, come learn to swap! Okay, so I admit, there isn’t much “education” involved in swapping clothes and accessories, but its a lot of fun and you’ll meet great people (with great style). As far as I’m concerned, it still fits our curriculum. All you need to do is bring a bag of clothing or some useful non-wearable items, and it always helps to bring a little donation to make sure Night School continues to happen. I guess if we’re learning anything, were learning that you don’t have to shop…you just need to swap. Feel free to bring drinkables and edibles too.

No Parking on the Dancefloor #10

N0_PARKING10

DeeJays: $mall ¢hange, Joro Boro, Barney Iller

Finally! The return of (to misquote Ted Turner about the Braves) “America’s” party. That’s right kids, what really unites us all: free speech impediments, life, libertarians, and the pursuit of unregulated corporate bonuses. And of course DANCING, which the NY supreme court refused to acknowledge was a fundamental human right (and that’s why the no dancing laws are STILL on the books, btw). We know, though. We know the time. Fuck these lame-ass, backward-ass, asinine-ass-motherfuckers. Dancing is some basic shit that we all should be enjoying more often than we do. Hence, ‘No Parking on the Dancefloor’. A party about getting down.

We’ve taken a short break to catch our breath but this shit can’t be stopped. Its now going monthly, with slightly expanded hours, and will be on the 3rd Thursday of the month, but the next one is THIS THURS July 30th with stella underground selectros Joro Boro and Barney Iller. Expect eclectic booty shakin’ selections for y’all to shake it don’t break it shake it to break it to.

The evening also features choreography by Katie Clancy and Sarah Wollschlager performed by Sego Marchand.

Ride on Til Dawn II: The Lion’s Den

We are celebrating everyone’s favorite zodiac sign… Leo! come celebrate those courageous, exuberant and sometimes gratuitous friends who were born under the sign of the lion. It’s a party for Leos, by Leos…like our friends and collaborators Jordann, Anya, Lena and Aaron. For some reason, a lot of people involved in making the House of Yes possible and wonderful are Leo’s. Coincidence? No. Lets party.

But its not just any old birthday party…It’s also a farewell party. After 9 years and 360 days in New York, everyone’s favorite bus-driving, music making, story telling sound-man, Aaron Goldsmith, is leaving our fair metropolis for the granola-covered eco-friendly hippie hills of the West Coast. Yes, his Circus Bus is going West too. Aaron has been the man responsible for bringing us live jams, funky beats, and soul-train dance-offs till dawn over the years. And we love him for it. This might be your last time ever to enjoy a party at the House of Yes that is brought to you by Aaron (at least until 3 months from now)

With awesome bands:

Prez Powerz (Intergalactic Hip hop with break dancers)

Escarioka (Latin Ska and rock steady with horns!)

FreeBass (Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass Bass and Beats)
