End of the World Party (Just in Case)
Congratulations everyone, 2009 is finally over. We hear 2010 will be the best year of your life.
::::::::::::Thursday, December 31st:::::::::::::::::::
There is not a New Years Eve party at the House of Yes simply because what we are planning on doing is just a little too “DANGER”ious for our humble little theater. Instead, all the usual suspects are taking over a whole floor of a warehouse just 4 blocks away. We’re bringing our upright piano, aerial gear, our favorite brass bands and building a full carnival, corn dog stand included!!!
The party starts at 3rd Ward down the street, but if you wanna skip that and go straight to the circus go to 341 Scholes St. (right next to Morgan Ave) We’re on the first floor. Its so fancy!
We’re opening doors at 11 pm, and going till VERY late.
Come celebrate with the Lady Circus, Man Circus (our manly friends from the boat!) Stumblebum Brass Band, Raya Brass Band, Mikey Freedom-Hart and the moving piano lounge, Mickey Western, Vintage DJ, Mike Richtor the slack line pro, Owen the Big Skinny, Select members of FUCT comedy troupe and much much more.
Best thing ever and the greatest show on earth!

Cuddle Magic travels far and wide with tons of instruments, lamps, and a penguin. They make venues seem smaller. They make music with violins, drums, clarinets, basses, trumpets, keyboards, guitars, banjos, harmonicas, recorders, flutes, a vibraphone, and voices. They are as friendly and inclusive as their name might suggest — after forming as a quintet over a year ago, they have gradually come to incorporate more and more of their musical friends into the band, constructing intricate soundscapes that include elements of folk music, avant-garde classical music, world music, and urban music.
This is a good show to take your parents or your jazz professor to. We promise.

Told in 13 acts, “Memoriam” explores the story of a troupe of actors on the last leg of their vaudeville tour. On the last night of their show, at the House of Yes, relationships hit a breaking point, while the lines between what is real and what is scripted begin to blur. A true collaboration, the project is an assembly of text, clown, music, and dance. This rag-tag show is not to be missed!

House of Halloween Hangover
We survived Halloween…kind of. Our wigs are caked in dried blood, our bodies and egos are bruised, and our psyches are forever scarred from this weekend. We made it out alive, or at least half-alive, and The House of Yes is no longer haunted (check out www.houseofyes.org/gallery/ to see how terrible it got!). Like it or not, there is life after Halloween and we are still as busy as ever with workshops, clothing swaps and dance parties. Come over to House of Yes this week, and we will help you get over your Post-Halloween-Depression.

Haunted House Of Yes
Setting foot into the House of Yes on any day of the year is generally a shocking experience. For two nights only, this Halloween, House of Yes is abandoning any taste and restraint, and letting the deranged side shine. The entertainment within the Haunted House of Yes ranges from X-rated to other worldly, from profound to fucked up.
Only the most demented performance, installation and video artists, musicians, architects and comedians were selected to create this multi-sensory disaster.
Haunted House of Yes is conceptualized and created by Graham Skipper of FUCT (a torture comedy troupe) and Julia LaVault (House of Yes’ lighting designer). Contributing artists include Zev David Deans, Pak-Kei Mak, Philip “Slime” Riley, Van hughes and Leslie McDonel, and Emmanuelle Chammah.
Be ready to sign a waiver and prove that you’re over 18, and sorry in advance for the post traumatic stress disorder.

Clothing & Stuff Swap for the Burnt
Has your house ever burnt down? If so, you understand the frustration of having everything you own be burnt, melted, smelly or just plain gone. Our friends Flambeaux, Akim and Lady C recently experienced a fire that ripped through their apartments and ruined all of their belongings. Therefore, we are hosting a clothing & stuff swap to help you clean your closet and also to give our friends some clothes and necessities. Everyone is welcomed to swap and grab new things- but the people who had their house burn down get first dibs.
If you cant make it Wednesday night but still want to donate, please contact kaeburke@gmail.com and set up a time to drop off your donations. Thanks!

Slapstick Dojo: Learn to Fall Funny
The Slapstick Dojo teaches physical comedy using martial arts techniques. Students will learn how to trip, slip, fall down, and slap each other in safe and funny ways. This conflict may be between individuals, between a person and an object, or between a person and his environment. The class operates similar to a yoga or martial arts class, where students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to “workout” and further develop technique. Borrowing ideas from martial arts training such as Kata and Waza the Slapstick Dojo aims to teach slapstick techniques and classic slapstick gag structure.

Birds, Ghosts and Marching Bands
This is the last weekend to see our latest in-house production,
Twitchers. The first week was quite honestly one of the best shows to
be seen in our theatre…and that’s not just our own opinion either!
This weekend, we’ll be doing it all again, just for you…but that’s
not all. We are also having a marching-band after-party on Thursday
following Twitchers! Seriously, if you miss this show, you might feel
performance deprived and artistically unsatisfied. See it.
In Make Fun, Halloween is taking over the studio, and we will be
offering weekly Wednesday costume workshops! Make it.
Also for Halloween (Our Official Favorite Holiday), we are once again
sharing the spotlight and inviting artists to collaborate on our 1st
annual Haunted House of Yes. Do it.

CLOUD SWING & CREATIVITY WORKSHOP
Cloud swing is an aerial apparatus we recently stumbled upon due to Seanna Sharpe who’s been teaching “circustentialism” here at Sky Box. Its a big loop of rope suspended by two points. Using it requires a mixture of trapeze, silk and hammock skills. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned swinger, this is a chance to explore, create, and play on one of the most comfortable and enjoyable pieces of circus equipment ever invented. We will learn mounts, climbs, wraps, and drops for ALL LEVELS
In addition to being a ship-load of fun, this event is a FUNDRAISER to buy us all what we`ve always wanted – a cloud swing of our very own, which will live at the Skybox and be available for lessons, rehearsals, and even performance!
Workshop will be CAPPED at 8 people, so please RSVP for your ticket to the sky at theskybox.org/calendar.

The aim of the workshop is to uncover the child-like sense of wonder that each of us can find within ourselves, and infuse our approach to performance with openness, spontaneity, and adventure. It’s about remembering that, as performers, our “work” is actually PLAY; from moment to moment to moment to moment. The series of exercises will draw from sources as various as the physical acting techniques of Jerzy Grotowski, the deconstructionist choreographic theory of the Six Viewpoints, the laser-precision of Neo-Classical textwork, and the mind-and-body expanding practices of Tantra Yoga. Please bring a memorized piece of text, about one minute in length. Twelve lines of Shakespeare will do if you’re stuck. It can even be a song. This workshop is open to all, regardless of level of experience in any field of performance.
This workshop is $20.
Taught by our brilliant instructor, Michael Bartelle… www.michaelbartelle.com .

:::::Aerial Open Mic: Seeking performers for September 18th
The Skybox at the House of Yes is currently seeking performers and acts to showcase during our maritime-themed, aerial-infused open mic. The performance will take place at Skybox (www.theskybox.org), on Friday, September 18. The theme is all things maritime. Pirates, mermaids, sailors, octopi, aquatic creatures and boats are all acceptable inspirations, but feel free to think of your own maritime influence. In the past we have hosted open mic performances that were entirely aerial-focused, but we are now opening our open mic up to all inspired people with brilliant acts to show their stuff! As long as it’s maritime, we want to see it! We are also pleased to announce that we have a phenomenal MC for this show. His name is Ben “he-man” Devoe and he’s a real life pirate! He lives on the giant ferryboat parked a few blocks from Skybox with his other pirate friends. Aside from being absolutely hilarious and a great singer, he was also once a bodybuilder. There will be a simple audition process, conducted by Anya. Please contact her at anya(at)ladycircus.com to discuss. She is away at sea for the moment, so please allow a few days for a response.
::::House of Yes helps the Yes Men…(and you can too)

This is the biggest operation that the yes men have ever tried, and they need your help to make it float. Literally. Click the links if you want to be a part of a large-scale practical joke.
If you are a group leader and want to organize your friends:
fill out this group availability form, one time on behalf of your group
If you are willing to wear corporate or clean professional looking attire AND/OR a Survivaball, fill out this:
individual availability form on behalf of yourself
If you are a shooter with your own equipment:
update your availability here and Brandon will be in touch with you
:::::Is there a Yoga Teacher in the House?
No there is not. And there SHOULD be!
We have had requests for a yoga class at the House of Yes. If you are interested in teaching yoga on a donation basis, please contact kaeburke@gmail.com, so we can discuss a schedule and details. We already have blocks, straps and yoga mats. We just need someone to make us go “OM”.

Night School: Double Feature
This Wednesday we are offering two classes at the same time! Only at the House of Yes can you find a vegetarian cooking class right next to a Haitian dance class. Same time, same place, same price. Come, choose and learn something new.
Dances of Snakes and Dirty Old Dead Men
Rich and complex, Afro-Haitian folkloric dance has a movement and rhythm for every mood, but here we’ll stick to the basics of three. First, we’ll practice the undulating, snaky moves of Yanvalou, emulating waves and the serpent god. Then we’ll crank it up with the crazy carnival dance Rara. And lastly Banda, where we’ll take on the persona of naughty gede spirits, who drink, cuss, and dance nasty (they even rub hot peppers on their privates, but we’ll skip that) to stimulate procreation and to create laughter. To really get into Banda, consider bringing a cane, sunglasses (pref with one lens) and a hat—and wear something black and torn that you can move in. Haitian rum will be on hand—and hopefully a drummer. $10-$25 (to cover drummer and rum)
For the past decade, Libby Sentz has immersed herself in Afro-Haitian dance. A wordsmith by day, you can often find her at night performing with the Mikerline Haitian Dance and Drum Company or the Hungry March Band.
Cooking with Compassion: Vegan and Vegetarian Gourmet Cuisine
Adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is not only healthier for you and of course our furry friends, but studies are also showing it to significantly reduce your ecological footprint. In this course we will create an exciting five course dinner menu that will impress your gastronome guests, from appetizer to decadent dessert. Also we will be covering the basics of veggie and vegan cooking, stocking the veggie pantry, as well as the secrets to easily adapting your favorite recipes.

Our friends the Yes Men (http://www.theyesmen.org/) need your help NOW to pull off some large-scale shenanigans in September. It’ll be fun and stupid, and it’ll probably create a splash in the media. They are professionals at playing pranks on corporations.
Be a part of something big!
Right now in Make Fun we are constructing 20 large-scale, ridiculous costumes to be worn at events, actions and appearances.
If you have sewing or building skills, please help this super-secret-project come to life! We are working from 12pm-11pm every day except Saturday/Sunday.
Email Kaeburke@gmail.com if you would like to sew and change the world! Let us know when you can come by.
We also need people who can wear the costumes, document, edit or just help in anyway they possibly can. Want to be involved? contact Larken at larken@artevolve.org.

Night School: Circustentialism: An Exploration of Circus Choreography
This Night School class is essentially an excercise in play, a chance
to work through our creative process organically through exploring
concepts of space, shape, story, time, emotion, and movement. Our
professor, Seanna Sharpe, will emphasize finding presence in
transitions as well as in “moves”, creating sequences that flow. She
will also teach methods of developing stylization (opportunities for
embellishment, movement, and creative interpretation within form).
Students will learn intermediate movements and then be given an
opportunity to create their own piece, finding a sequence that
highlights their own personal artistic voice.
Like any good education, the goal if this class is not to teach the
students what to think but rather how to think. Instead of simply
stringing together moves or teaching sequences of ideas, it is an
opportunity to play, explore, and find your own personal experience of
expression as a choreographer, a dancer, and an artist.

A Lovely Evening with Cuddle Magic
Cuddle Magic is a large ensemble from West Philly/Brooklyn that
performs lush, whimsical songs with wide-ranging instrumentation
including strings, percussion, vibraphone, trumpet, clarinet,
keyboards, guitars, and sweet vocal harmonies. Their unique stage
set-up includes half a dozen small lamps and a 3-foot plastic penguin
set amidst the players and their many instruments. The ensemble, which
sometimes swells to 12 or more, plays deftly crafted arrangements of
their complex and varied set of original music. They are as friendly
and inclusive as their name might suggest — after forming as a
quintet over a year ago, they have gradually come to incorporate more
and more of their musical friends into the band.
Some pieces will be accompanied by choreographers/dancers Emily
Vetsch and Fayth Caruso
Artist Laura Steele will be using multiple sources including live
feeds, and remixed video compositions creating a fertile visual
landscape.

650 people. These strapping fellows walk around shirtless digging
ditches and pulling heavy ropes, and they really know how to have a
good time. We like them A LOT. But these hard working hunks of muscle
need some cash to keep afloat.
Lady Circus and House of Yes will be helping them raise some booty
this Saturday. And you can help too by showing up and attempting to
party as hard as they do. Good luck!
Here’s the very intense and epic promo they wrote for their party, we
edited it to make it a little less dense to read. Also excuse all the
caps, they are just very excited, as they should be because this is
going to be the best thing ever.

Night School: Movement Improv Workshop
This week at Night School, we will explore new ways to move your body through space using various exercises designed to encourage participants to get out of their mind and into their bodies.
We will be warming up with blindfolded solo work, finding the place in us that is beyond mind and logical thinking. We will move into partner work, exploring ways to stay connected with ourselves while authentically engaging with another human. To close out we will experiment with a massive group improvisation culminating into a free form unpredictable dance explosion.
Be brave, be creative, dare to look ridiculous. A fun and supportive place to go insane for a couple hours.
Facilitated by Lopi LaRoe who is a bona fide genius of mental experimentation.

This Night School, come learn to swap! Okay, so I admit, there isn’t much “education” involved in swapping clothes and accessories, but its a lot of fun and you’ll meet great people (with great style). As far as I’m concerned, it still fits our curriculum. All you need to do is bring a bag of clothing or some useful non-wearable items, and it always helps to bring a little donation to make sure Night School continues to happen. I guess if we’re learning anything, were learning that you don’t have to shop…you just need to swap. Feel free to bring drinkables and edibles too.

No Parking on the Dancefloor #10
DeeJays: $mall ¢hange, Joro Boro, Barney Iller
Finally! The return of (to misquote Ted Turner about the Braves) “America’s” party. That’s right kids, what really unites us all: free speech impediments, life, libertarians, and the pursuit of unregulated corporate bonuses. And of course DANCING, which the NY supreme court refused to acknowledge was a fundamental human right (and that’s why the no dancing laws are STILL on the books, btw). We know, though. We know the time. Fuck these lame-ass, backward-ass, asinine-ass-motherfuckers. Dancing is some basic shit that we all should be enjoying more often than we do. Hence, ‘No Parking on the Dancefloor’. A party about getting down.
We’ve taken a short break to catch our breath but this shit can’t be stopped. Its now going monthly, with slightly expanded hours, and will be on the 3rd Thursday of the month, but the next one is THIS THURS July 30th with stella underground selectros Joro Boro and Barney Iller. Expect eclectic booty shakin’ selections for y’all to shake it don’t break it shake it to break it to.

Ride on Til Dawn II: The Lion’s Den
We are celebrating everyone’s favorite zodiac sign… Leo! come celebrate those courageous, exuberant and sometimes gratuitous friends who were born under the sign of the lion. It’s a party for Leos, by Leos…like our friends and collaborators Jordann, Anya, Lena and Aaron. For some reason, a lot of people involved in making the House of Yes possible and wonderful are Leo’s. Coincidence? No. Lets party.
But its not just any old birthday party…It’s also a farewell party. After 9 years and 360 days in New York, everyone’s favorite bus-driving, music making, story telling sound-man, Aaron Goldsmith, is leaving our fair metropolis for the granola-covered eco-friendly hippie hills of the West Coast. Yes, his Circus Bus is going West too. Aaron has been the man responsible for bringing us live jams, funky beats, and soul-train dance-offs till dawn over the years. And we love him for it. This might be your last time ever to enjoy a party at the House of Yes that is brought to you by Aaron (at least until 3 months from now)

Cirque du Quoi?!?
…an evening of elaborate absurdity
Its hard to describe what kind of a show this is, but its even harder to explain what kind of show it isn’t. This is the kind of show you must see for yourself. Entertaining? Definitely. Shocking? Absolutely. Epic? Of course.
See what happens when a circus troupe committed to a life of glamour and spectacle meets a comedy troupe dedicated to constant humiliation in the name of fun.
$20 gets you all the free beer you can drink, courtesy of Colt45!
(Compare to the other Cirque show at $97-$165)
